US 8th AF heavies hit German pocket

1945-04-15

HEAVIES HIT GERMAN POCKET IN WEST --- Activity for the second day flared up on the German Atlantic pocket at the mouth of the Gironde river, which still blocks the great port of Bordeaux. Meager anti-aircraft fire opposed more than 1,000 U.S. 8th A.F. heavy bombers dropping high explosives and 650-pound petroleum-gel fire bombs on military strong points, installations and batteries on 15 April 1945. TOP: A smoke marker streams down pointing the way to the target. CENTER: Bombs of the U.S. 8th A.F. Third Air Division explode on a military installation at Royan. BOTTOM: As one cloud of smoke drifts away from the target, another pattern of bombs completes the carpet, cutting across the point.
