US 3rd Army Troops Across Rhine

GERMANY - Burning buildings (upper left) mark the passage of U. S. Third Army troops in the bridgehead established across the Rhine under protection of Major General O. P. Weyland's XIX Tactical Air Command. The first tanks were ferried across on pontoon rafts which were later assembled into a bridge (right center) from the bridgehead side. XIX Tactical Air Command pilots shot down 23 enemy aircraft in the vicinity of the bridgehead the first day and a half. 23 March 1945.
