FOUR SCENES FOLLOWING DOOLITTLE ATTACK ON TOKYO. This composite photograph chronologically depicts four incidents following the Army Air Forces raid on Tokyo and several other Japanese cities, led by Lieutenant General James H. Doolittle, then Lieutenant colonel, on April 18, 1942. Top left, a group of the surviving raiders are shown outside an air raid shelter carved in a mountainside in China where they assembled after bombing Japan. Lower left, an unidentified flier, injured in bailing out, is shown on a cot in a Chinese home. Colonel John A. Hilger, then a major, one of the pilots, is standing behind the injured man. Upper right, Colonel Hilger is being decorated by Madame Chiang Kai-Shek, with General Doolittle partly hidden in the background. Lower right, General Doolittle, is shown talking to Lieutenant General Henry H. Arnold (left), then commanding general of the AAF, after raiders had been returned to the United States.
