This Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress of the U.S. Army 8th Air Force, returning from a mission over Rouen with its brake system completely shot out, crashed into another B-17 which was parked near the end of the runway. Fire immediately broke out and engulfed both planes in flames. The crew of the bomber miraculously escaped without injury.
