These Rocks Show The Effect Of Artillery Fire Which Blasted Out

1945-06-12

DOUGHBOYS TAKE JAGGED CLIFFS - Infantrymen of the 383rd Regiment, 96th Division, inched up this escarpment against heavy Jap resistance during the final days of the battle for Okinawa Shima. These rocks show the effect of artillery fire which blasted out cave positions. Level ground in front of the escarpment made advance to the cliff's base extremely difficult. Interlocking fire from Jap caves on the face of the escarpment held up the Yanks until flame throwers and satchel charges closed the deadly strong points. 12 June 1945.
