The sunken barges are Jap vessels, which were trying to land supplies to their forces when B-25 Mitchell medium bombers of the U.S. Army 5th Air Force struck. Such forays by American planes are everyday occurrences since the air-land sea warfare in the South Pacific has been stepped up in tempo.
