The camera catches a stark and dramatic picture on an 8th AAF Flying Fortress station at the dusk of D-Day as the big bombers come in after making their third attack on tactical targets in Normandy in support of the Allied landings. The long neon-like streamer is from the headlights of a Fortress which has just landed; the arched flares fired from the ground signals all other planes to stay clear of the runway; and in the sky are the flares fired from a plane coming in with wounded aboard. Silhouetted in the foreground are the medical officers who wait for the flare-firing planes to come in.
