Soldier guards aircraft at Maison Blanch

ON GUARD - A soldier of the "Corps des Douair" guards Allied aircraft being assembled by men of the 36th Air Depot Group at Maison Blanch, Algeria. His blue and yellow Zouave uniform which dates from the last century contrasts strangely with the sleek modern lines of the Republic P-47 "Thunderbolts". The Douairs are natives of North Africa, both Arab and Berber, who have completed their military service but are overage or otherwise unqualified for frontline service. The Dorps Douairs, existing only in Algeria, is used to guard airdromes, railroads, bridges and other Allied military installations. 27 March 1944.
