Smoke shrouds a portion of the city of Metz in this photograph taken the day the city fell to the 3rd Army and the 19th Tactical Air Command of the 9th Air Force. During the 15 day assault 9th Air Force fighter-bombers and 3rd Army Artillery pounded forts and strong points to ease the advance of Infantry and Tanks. Metz fell on 11/23/44.
