Rocket site at Wizernes

1944-04-11

FRANCE - Rocket site at Wizernes, France, is located on edge of a cliff overlooking a quarry. Work began in Aug 43 with digging of circular trench above quarry. This was then covered with a concrete dome about 15 feet thick and 200 feet across, then covered with dirt as an added protection. Dome and trench have an opening, presumably for launching, aimed at London. On completion of dome, enormous quantities of rubble have been removed, indicating presence of large hollow space under it. In addition there are a number of tunnels in the face of the cliff at various levels, one connected with a rail line which runs through the cliff to the quarry on the other side, also used as a dump for spoil. This stereo pair dated 11 April 1944, shows dome in process of construction.
