Railroad yard hit at Pontassieve

Another railroad yard hit by the bombers of the Strategic Air Force (U.S. 15th AAF Fortresses and RAF Wellingtons) was at Pontassieve, just outside Florence, on the main line to Rome. The Air Plan called for a knockout before the Allied landings on 22 Jan south of Rome. This reconnaissance photo shows how the rail lines converge to provide a valuable target for precision bombing at the point of the railroad bridge at the northern bottleneck of the yard.
