RAF Lancasters at 8th AF base

Looking like a fourth of July celebration, this photo was made on a bleak December morning at an 8th AF heavy bomber base when a flight of RAF Lancasters, returning from bombing targets deep in Germany, were unable to land at their own field and landed at this 8th AAF field. Flares arching into the sky and field lights illuminate the control tower and two dispersed Boeing B-17s.
