Pillboxes in Northern France
Steel and concrete pill-boxes and gun emplacements, miles of barbed wire entanglements, and innumerable obstructions were the order of the day along beaches of Northern France prior to D-Day. U.S. 8th Air Force heavy bombers dropped thousands of tons of bombs along the beaches during their pre-invasion attacks and the effect of their efforts can be seen here clearly. Openings have been blasted in the deadly wire, pill-boxes and coastal guns silenced and obstructions knocked out.
