The 401st Bomb Group honors a North American P-51 "Mustang" pilot, green in combat and green in the European Theatre of Operations, who single-handedly shot down four German fighters which were queueing up to attack the group's formation on its return from a mission to Sorau, Germany, on 29 May 1944. Among Lt. Dale Spencer's eager audience were Major General Lawrence S. Kuter and Brig. General Robert W. Williams. The group includes, left to right: General Williams, Lt. Spencer, pilot extraordinary, General Kuter, and Colonel Harold W. Bowman, Commanding General of the 401st Bomb Group, England.
