P51 Mustangs over Leipzig
After part of the forces of 700 North American P-51 Mustangs and Republic P-47 Thunderbolts that were escorting U.S. Eighth Air Force heavy bombers in their attack on Leipzig and Halle, Germany, 27 Feb.45, had strafed this airdrome these parked German fighters were left burning where they stood. A force of 1,100 Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses and Consolidated B-24 Liberators bombed important rail centers at Leipzig and Halle and the fighters strafed enemy airdromes and rail lines destroying 70 parked German planes, shot up 44 locomotives and 154 railroad cars.
