P47 Thunderbolts at Tavernelle
Two attacks by Republic P47 Thunderbolts of the 12th A.F. were necessary before the Germans were wrested from these occupied buildings at Tavernelle, on the outskirts of Bologna, Italy, during the 5th Army drive. In addition to setting fire to the houses, this attack by planes of a Fighter Group also silenced gun positions in the area and created a large explosion infront of the house in the foreground. The 12th A.F. worked right along with the ground forces in the advance, stepping in to knock out stubborn positions like this one.
