P47 Pilots England
AN EIGHTH AAF FIGHTER STATION, ENGLAND: Picture of the five Republic P-47 Thunderbolt pilots who knocked five German fighters out of the sky when the latter tried to go to work on a flak-battered staggering Boeing B-17 Fortress near Bremen. The pilots, after destroying the three Messerschmit 109s and two Focke-Wulfe 109s picked up their "Big Friend" and brought it back across the Channel. Seated on the wing (left to right) are Capt. Winfield W. McIntyre, 24, of Fayetteville, N.Y., who got a 109, and 1st Lt. Harold S. Riley, Jr., 22, of Portland, Oregon, who destroyed a FW 190. Sitting on the fuselage smoking an unlighted pipe is 1st Lt. Clayton E. Davis, 22, of Brookfield, Vt., who blew up a 190 also. Seated in the cockpit (without a hat) is Capt. Donald K. Dilling, 23, of Cincinnati, Ohio, who shattered a 109, his third in 24 days (note the three swastikas painted on the cockpit), and (right next to him) 1st Lt. Daniel T. Britt, Jr., 22, of Portsmouth, Va., who shot up a 109. The ship on which the boys are sitting is Capt. Dilling's "Queen City Mama."
