These 15th AF P-51s flying high over Italy bear the tail markings of the 31st Fighter Group, which destroyed 570 enemy planes. Wing tanks are dropped when enemy aircraft are met, to make the Mustang more maneuverable and to remove a target vulnerable to incendiaries.
