P-51 Mustang taking off in southern Italy

Taking off from a steel matted runway at an airdrome in southern Italy, this P-51 Mustang, high altitude fighter of the 15th AAF climbs gracefully to join the other fighters of its squadron, who will rendezvous with heavy bombers of the 15th AAF to act as their escort to and from the target. Two belly tanks, one under each wing, give this new Mustang a far greater range than ever before.
