P-47 Thunderbolts near Dieuze

Ninth AF Republic P-47 Thunderbolts, carrying out an operation originally planned for heavy bombers, dived from 7,000 to 100 feet to breach the Etang de Landre dam near Dieuze, about 25 miles east of Nancy, France. The mission against the 200 year old, 60 foot thick dam, requested by Lt. Gen. George S. Patton, Jr., was led by Lt. Col. Joseph L. Laughlin, Omaha, Neb. This picture showing water pouring through 15 foot break and into the valley, was taken 15 seconds after the breach was created. Twenty four hours after the attack, water from Lake Linderweiher was still flooding German military positions in the Moselle Valley. Date 8-5-44 Photographed AC/AS, Intelligence HQ, A.A.F. Rec.
