P-47 Thunderbolts in Italy

This fighter group of Republic P-47's in the 15th Air Force in Italy named themselves the "Checker Tails" and painted their planes accordingly. They have chalked up an enviable record as long range "top cover" for the heavies of the 15th Air Force in their deep penetrations into Nazi southern Europe. Three auxiliary gas tanks enable them to accompany the bombers to nearly any target yet attacked. 325th Fighter Group.
