P-47 Thunderbolts at San Michele

Attempts by the Germans to repair this railroad bridge at San Michele, north of Trento, Italy, was intercepted by repeated attacks by Republic P-47 Thunderbolts of the U.S. 12th A.F. The center span, which had been reconstructed after previous attacks by P-47's and North American B-25 Mitchells, again has been damaged by bombs. The support for the track appears to have been knocked loose from the pier and is hanging down in the river. Nazi maintenance crews work frantically to keep their lines of communications open, but American airmen diligently strive to blockade the enemy.
