P-47 Thunderbolt under C-47 in New Guinea
By slinging the wing of a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane to the underside of a C-47 Douglas transport, members of a service squadron at a New Guinea base of the 5th AF Service Command have accomplished an engineering feat believed to be the first of its kind in any theater of war. The installation has been used on various occasions to transport new wings to P-47s which were damaged while landing in remote areas where repair facilities were limited or entirely lacking.
