P-47 Thunderbolt in Germany

His crash-landed Republic P-47 Thunderbolt ready for the salvage dump, 1st Lt. Hoyt S. Benge, examines the damage resulting from a direct hit by an 88 mm shell during a dive bombing mission over Germany. Despite the severe damage, Lt. Benge, Portersville, Calif., flew the plane back to his base and landed unhurt. He is a member of one of Major General Hoyt S. Vandenberg's Ninth Air Force fighter bomber units cooperating with ground forces.
