P-38 Lightnings in dogfight

A formation of 20 Lockheed P-38s had completed a successful fighter-bomber mission on 25 May 1943 and was headed home when they were jumped by four FW-190's and twenty ME 109's. The dogfight lasted 25 minutes, and resulted in a victory for the P-38's. The following four men, pictured left to right, got two claims apiece: 1st Lt. John A. MacKay, 23 Brown Ave., St. Albans, Vermont, (2 ME 109's); 2nd Lt. Samuel F. Sweet, 1218 Portland Place, St. Paul, Minn., (2 ME 109's); 2nd Lt. Warren A. Holden, 202 Walnut Court, Waterloo, Iowa (2 FW 190's) and 2nd Lt. Frank J. McIntosh, 115 Irving St., San Francisco, Calif., (2 ME 109's).
