A.G. Palermo harbor after the smoke of the U.S. Army Air Forces bombing raid had cleared away. Compare this picture with Picture No. 1 and note the extensive damage done by almost 75 tons of bombs. By following the areas marked off and numbered a clearer idea will be given of the crippling effects of the raid on the harbor and shipping. (1) Two 120-foot vessels have been blasted from the water and deposited in a damaged condition on the pier. (2) a 270-foot warehouse has been wrecked and a 300-foot ship sunk alongside the pier. (3) A hole 150 feet by 300 feet has been blasted in the pier by explosion of stricken munitions ship, the force of which was so violent the high-flying B-17's felt the concussion; warehouse wrecked; 410-foot merchant vessel damaged and an enemy destroyer damaged and listing at her berth. (4) Seaplane station damaged. (5) Naval Headquarters (below) damaged by two direct hits and a two-bay shed destroyed. (6) Acre upon acre of waterfront buildings, offices and warehouses, once highly useful to the Axis; now damaged badly. (7) Garabaldi Barracks and port station warehouses destroyed by the highly accurate bombing. (8) A 350-foot merchant vessel sunk alongside pier.
