This Remarkable Photograph

This remarkable photograph, taken from a 15th AAF Flying Fortress during the February 25 attack on the Prufening Aircraft factory at Regensburg, Germany, shows a German fighter (lower left) dropping away after making an unsuccessful pass at the formation. More than 200 Nazi planes attempted to intercept the heavy bombers, and this photo was taken over the outskirts of Regensburg. Fortress and Liberator gunners shot down 93 enemy aircraft during the long, fierce battle. The attack on the factory was coordinated with the bombers of the 8th Air Force, based in England, and the plant was almost completely destroyed.
