Northrop P-61 on Middleburg Island

On 17 August 1944, Brig. General Earl W. Barnes brought his Northrop P-61 in for a trim landing on the strip on Middleburg Island, off the coast of Dutch New Guinea. This marked the official opening of the airstrip with swarms of transport planes and fighters following.
