S/Sgt Ned Howard, from Hazelton, Idaho, one of the first American airmen to go down on the first raid over Ploesti, Rumania in August, 1943, smiles cheerfully, though he lost a leg as a result of being shot down. He was a Prisoner of War for over thirteen months. Treatment of Allied airmen by Rumanians was generally reported as good. 17 Sept 44
