Naples under air attack

Prior to the Allied occupation of Naples, that Italian city had been under consistent air attack by planes of the Northwest African Air Forces. Railroads and yards were prime targets, the object being to hamper retreat by the German units. After the Allies captured Naples, those same railroads had to be repaired and replaced to give the Allies the use of facilities which they had denied to the enemy. These photographs tell some of the story of what happened to Naples rail yards. Shortly after the capture of Naples, American Army Engineers had the damaged roundhouse in working condition. Mt. Vesuvius may be seen in the background.
