Such units as this was used during the war to enable the armadas of Boeing B-29s striking Japan to return to bases on pinpoint islands in the Pacific in instrument weather. The Airways and Air Communications Service, celebrating its eight anniversary November 15, 1946, recently took over the job from the Civil Aeronautics Authority of handling Army craft flying the airways.
