Mitchell Bomber over Paramushiru Island

Leaving a 2,500 ton Japanese cargo ship doomed in the anchorage, a Mitchell bomber (over shoreline, lower right) of the 11th sweeps in low over the Kashiwabara army staging area, Paramushiru Island, for a strafing run behind another Mitchell which shared in the sinking on 11 May 1945. Kataoka Naval Base, off Shimushu Island in the Kurile Group. Six of the enemy vessels were sunk or damaged, their biggest days toll of shipping in almost two years.
