Me-100 at abandoned Luftwaffe base
The pilot of this enemy ME-100 shot down eight British and one Russian plane, according to the symbols painted on the swastika decorated tail. The ME-100 was one of 15 German planes of several types abandoned when Luftwaffe personnel fled their base before advancing U. S. ground forces. 2nd Lt. Richard C. Lunna, Newport Center, Vt., a pilot in the 9th A.F. fighter-bomber group of Col. Ray J. Stecker, Hazleton, Pa., is shown examining a bullet hole in the tail.
