Aerial view showing a phase of construction of Mar Strip, near Cape Sansapor on the Dutch New Guinea mainland, 26 August 1944. The serious difficulty encountered was gradually overcome - the sub soil was found to be soft and "sinky" and it was necessary to build this up to a solid base as the strip must be able to sustain the weight of heavy bombers.
