Lt Martin Johnson in France

Lt. Martin H. Johnson, Jr., of Scott St., Fort Worth, Texas, announcing the destruction of three Nazi airplanes in enemy-occupied France. Johnson, after escorting the AAF's heavy bombers got all three of his victims on the ground on his way home -- an FW 190 at one airport, and an ME 109 and an ME 110 at another field. All of them were seen to burn after Johnson strafed them. As the Fort Worth flier fired at the planes on the second field he could see the ground defenses blazing away at him with intense flak. His Republic P-47 Thunderbolt suffered hits in the fuselage, elevator, tail wheel and turbo-super-charger, and the flak also severed a rudder control cable and forced him to land without his rear wheel.
