Lt. Col. John A. Brooks III, Greenville, Ohio, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross by Lt. Gen. Carl A. Spaatz, CG of the U.S. Strategic Air Forces in Europe. (Col. Brooks commands the U.S. 8th AF Second Air Division's Scouting in-formation concerning the mission.) Col. Brooks was cited for extraordinary heroism on February 9, 1945, when he led a flight of four Mustangs against approximately 100 ME 109's, shot down the leader and effectively prevented an attack upon the bombers.
