Liberators and Forts over Southwest Germany

TEAM WORK: Perfect co-ordination of Forts and Liberators of the 8th AAF is seen in this unusual photo of heavy bombers during an attack into Southwest Germany, 30 Dec, 1943. Libs can be seen flying the lower position, with Forts seen in upper foreground. Record formations of Flying Fortress and Liberators covered by equally large forces of fighter protection constituted the largest air task force ever dis-patched by the 8th AAF. Flak batteries threw up an intense barrage. Cloud cover prevented accurate assess-ment of damage, but returning crew members reported seeing large columns of black smoke raining through the overcast.
