Col. Laurence B. Kelly of Grover, Missouri, Commanding Officer of the 494th Bomb Group, stands beside the wreckage of his Consolidated B-24 Liberator "The Missouri Mule". On 10 April 1945, Col. Kelly led his group into combat to smash a Jap stronghold in the Philippine Islands. While over the target, the landing gear to his plane was shot away by Jap ack ack. Col. Kelly was forced to make a belly landing when he returned to his base on Angaur Island, Caroline Islands.
