Japanese Freighter Attacked Aleutians
AIR ATTACK FROM THE ALEUTIANS -- Its bridge disintegrating under a direct hit, this Japanese freighter lies dead in the water as a small trawler (lower left) scurries for safety, smoking from strafing damage. The cargo ship was one of six sunk or damaged by U.S. Army 11th Air Force Mitchells and Liberators in the biggest day's bag by Aleutian-based planes since 1943. One B-25 was lost in the heavy flak barrage put up by enemy ship and shore batteries. (Note: This is NOT the same vessel shown in other photos of this mission.)
