Japanese Cargo Ship Burning At Katoka Naval Base

Doomed 2,500 ton Japanese c argo ship is shown in this close ranged photograph still exploding from hits from a Mitchell bomber and burning furiously, dead in the water at the Kataoka Naval Base off Shimushu Island in the Northern Kuriles, on 11 May 1945 by 11th AF Mitchells and Liberators. Six ships were sunk or damaged. Note smaller craft, lower left and upper right, fleeing the target area. The armed trawler on the left was strafed by the Mitchell.
