(Photo No. 4 of 4) MAIN CAPTION: General MacArthur's communique on 11-4-43, reported the harbor at Rabaul, major enemy base in the Southwest Pacific, "was practically swept clean, nearly every ship there being heavily hit or sunk by 1,000-lb. bombs," as a result of the raid on 11-2-43 by planes of the 5th U.S.A.A.F. In these dramatic photos may be seen some of the 15 Jap vessels sunk and some of the 11 enemy ships damaged by the North American B-25 medium bombers. Smoke from the blazing water-front framed the harbor as a backdrop for the enemy ships sunk, sinking or burning. These four photos are the originals of telephotos previously released.
