STEP UP - PLENTY OF ROOM -- An 88-mm shell going through the left wing of his Republic P-47 Thunderbolt nearly knocked 1st Lieutenant Alva D. Henahan of San Diego, Calif., out of the cockpit, and it left a gaping hole large enough to stand in with room to spare. The California pilot, son of Mrs. W. C. Creech of 3987 Centre St., San Diego has completed more than eighty combat missions with the 350th Fighter Group, a veteran unit of the Italy-based 12th Air Force. Overseas since November, 1944, Lt. Henahan wears a clustered Air Medal and the War Department Distinguished Unit Badge.
