Because of the fierce Gulf heat, the ATC keeps men only four months at Bahrein and then rotates them to another base. Swimming is the principal off-duty recreation. Many GIs--tired of touring Shaikhs' palaces, visiting unexplained burial grounds and inspecting the large modern oil refinery-- try their hand at pear diving.
