German Officer In Metz

1944-11-22

This German officer, one of the defenders of Metz, France, captured when that bastion fell to combined American Air and Ground attack, 22 November 1944, still retains an air of arrogance as he pauses in a street of the city before being marched on to the rear. During the 15 day assault on the city, unconquered in 1500 years, 9th Air Force fighter-bombers and American artillery pounded forts and strong points to ease the advance of the Infantry and tanks.
