Flying Fortresses raid Athens/Kalamaki Airfield
1943-12-06
The acme of co-ordination, accuracy, and coverage on an airdrome target is shown in this picture taken during the raid on Athens/Kalamaki Airfield by the Flying Fortresses of the Fifteenth Air Force on Dec. 6, 1943. Photo interpretation shows that the large bomb bursts, in the center of the picture, are the 500 lb. bombs that damaged the hangers, other install-ations, and well post-holed the taxi-strip. The small bursts, around the perimeter of the airdrome, are fragmentation bombs which hit the dispersed aircraft and destroyed and damaged more than one-half of the 39 enemy aircraft on the ground.
