Flak suit at air base near Bengasi
At an air base near Bengasi, Cirenaica, Libya, S/Sgt. Joseph E. Tamuleirz of Millis, Mass., hands a "flak suit" through the waist window of a Liberator to T/Sgt. William G. Jordan of Columbia, S.C. The "flak suit" is designed to protect American flyers against anti-aircraft shell splinters. The men were preparing for the devastating raid on the Ploesti, Roumania oil fields and refineries, which supply more than 35% of the fuel for Germany's war machine.
