Eighth AAF Service Command station

EIGHTH AAF SERVICE COMMAND STATION - The work of the Eighth AAF Service Command is both varied and extensive. Along with supplying and maintaining Eighth Air Force equipment, Service Command also makes all modifications on new planes arriving in the European Theatre of Operations. Shown above is a modification which is installed on all newly arrived Lockheed Lightnings. It is an auxiliary gasoline tank in a leading edge of a wing, complete with a feed line. This tank is one of the reasons for the increased flying time of a Lightning. A Lightning with the latest Service Command modifications can escort a Flying Fort into inner parts of Germany.
