Chapel on Okinawa hillside

CHAPEL CONSTRUCTED BY AVIATION BATTALION STILL STANDS - Cemeteries aren't the only landmarks of the 1945 campaign for Okinawa. This chapel, built by the 85th Engineer Aviation Battalion after the landing three years ago, still stands on a hillside overlooking the East China Sea not far from Kadena. Two airmen, on a recent visit, are shown walking up the steps to read the plaque which states: "Dedicated to the Men who have given their lives that we might pause to Worship here. Constructed by 85th Engineer Aviation Battalion".
