Capt John Godfrey liberated

Captain John T. Godfrey, who has more German Planes to his credit than years in his life, was recently liberated from a Nazi prisoner of war camp by advancing American Armies. When shot down while flying with the 4th Fighter Group of the 8th Air Force last August 24, 1944 he had 36 enemy aircraft to his credit - 18 on the ground and 18 in the air. The 23 year old fighter pilot crashlanded after being hit and was picked up two days later and taken to Dulag, near Frankfurt for questioning. He was moved to Allied Airmen's POWcamp at Breslau at the end of the month and in January 1945 was forced to march from Breslau to Spremberg, east of Berlin. During the march, he escaped but was forced to return because of frozen feet. He was moved from Spremberg to the camp near Nuremberg from which he escaped early this month. But was later recaptured. When hearing that the camp was to be moved because of advancing American liberated on April 17. Capt. Godfry, whose hometown is Providence, RI, holds the Silver Star, the DFC with seven clustres and the Air Medal with three cluster. (Pilots)
