Capt Alvin D Skaggs with B-24 Liberator Vadie Raye
Capt. Alvin D. Skaggs of Lawton, Okla., ponders his luck as he holds charred remnant of his pilot's seat from the smoldering wreck of his ship, the Consolidated B-24 Liberator "Vadie Raye". The Lib was set afire by enemy fighter attacks after the assault of Hamm, Germany 22 April 44. Skaggs landed the stricken aircraft at its home base with the forward half of the ship blazing. Last man to leave his ship, he escaped immediately before it exploded.
